Red Cross

I have finished the hat I made using yarn given to Red Cross. After modeling it, I took it down to their shop where Niamiko put a $20 price tag on it. I hope it sells quickly. I wanted to get the remaining two balls of this yarn to make another one, but Ann had taken them home to make a small teddy bear. Since I like to knit, but I do not like stitching pieces together, I’ve never made a knit stuffed animal and am unlikely to ever.

After lunch, we went to Makana Confections, the chocolate shop where Emily worked during high school, or as it is know in NZ, college. University is after that. I lured into buying the macadamia nut toffee crunch after being given a free sample. At the register, there was bags of seconds, so I added those to our tab.

Next door is the kauri wood store, with beautiful bowls, cutting boards, sculptures, etc made of kauri wood. There were kōauau, Māori flutes with three holes. I tried blowing one to no avail. All were lovely, but we have no horizontal surfaces that need art on them. I bought a paua shell ring, surely not locally made, but I liked it.

Next, we went to the library to see the window that Red Cross is decorating next month to celebrate NZ Red Cross’ 85th anniversary. Betsy has been charged with printing out signs for the background. The library is next to a big playground and skate park. In the center is another large sculpture by the local artist Chris Booth. I gather less controversial than the swinging boulders.

For dinner, we ate at Tumeric, an Indian restaurant in downtown. We had the vegetable appetizer, naan, and shared a lamb curry. I have enough left for dinner another night.
