Inside Day

The weather was just poor enough to prevent us from working in the yard. No one complained. Betsy and I had coffee, then went off to garage sales in the intermittent sprinkles.. She found a cute white wooden corner stand for the porch, a tennis racket with which  she hopes to whack cabbage white butterflies, a non-chemical but lethal kill method, and a NZ-made decorative tile with gold toetoe fronds, a native pampas, against a dark green background.

I got ideas for a mailbox holder. NZ Post seems to be looser with mailbox regulations than the USPS. Many of what I see here would not meet muster back home, but they are certainly more interesting. I especially liked an old milk can just mounted sideways. I keep thinking I should get a manatee mailbox since we have seen more manatees in the springs and the St. John River than we did in south Florida.

One yard had skeletons driving a tractor and riding an exercise bike and a huge boat in their driveway. Scattered around their yard were columns of balls and shapes painted in primary colors, a Hundertwasser effect. Yard art at its finest.

After lunch, we went to Keith’s workplace so Betsy and I could print the Red Cross signs. After some false starts, I got on a roll with Publisher. I think I may be tasked with helping cut out the letter we printed, but I am not reminding Betsy of that. Some of the other RC members can take over if they’d like.

Keith had taken advantage of the damp weather to burn some of the brush accumulated around the yard. I was surprised that open burns were allowed, but it is certainly too damp for the fire to get out of control.

Dinner was delicious tofu in garlic orange sauce, sadly not over quinoa because Betsy forgot to start it. Broccoli from their garden and carrots. Dessert was blueberry (also from their garden) crumble with vanilla ice cream. We didn’t miss the quinoa at all.
