Flower Show

We needed to do laundry but the weather was not cooperative for drying on the line. The sun would come out, then another band of cold rain, then the sun, repeat, repeat. We decided to take our clothes to the laundromat in town to use their dryers.

While they dried, we walked over to Possum Trendz, where I fondled but did not buy, luxurious scarves, sweaters, and gloves. There was even a slouch hat like the one I’d just knitted for Red Cross, this one priced at $75. All soft, all lovely, all,way too warm for central Florida. Betsy had worked with the elderly shopkeeper at the age care center many years ago.

At All You Needle, I bought a meter each of 3 Kiwiana cotton materials to make aprons for me and the grandkids. I noticed the blue one was outlines of typical NZ symbols; Betsy realized it looks like paua shell. Really pretty.

Next up, the Kerikeri Garden Club’s flower show. A judged show like yet different from the ones I’ve seen in Florida. Red was the top prize, followed by blue, then yellow.  The iris and freesias were amazing. I liked the pavé succulent class and would have rated the breakfast tea tray entries in the opposite order. It would have been fun to clerk and listen to the judges’ comments. They also had several vegetable classes from individual pieces to a market basket class. The arrangements were much fuller than those I’ve seen, especially the miniatures. Our entries would have been much sparser.

Grant ordered coffee that came with a plate of food: asparagus roll (canned on buttered white bread), banana bread, a light roll with cream cheese and jam, and a ginger bar. All extremely yummy, and Betsy said, very typical. This should definitely be added to our garden shows.

The Men Shed had made lots of wooden pieces for sale including extremely lethal eRATicator traps, little car and helicopter toys, vine trellis, and 18” tall wooden men who sit on shelves. Maybe they were hooks. Too big to bring home, but we could consider making some for our outdoor shower wall.

The rain came and went, getting colder with each band. By 4:30, it had turned to small hail which didn’t last, and thankfully didn’t seem to do any damage.

Betsy made jackfruit bbq for dinner. We will make that again at home.
